The 1956 Continental is a hand built ultra luxury coupe offered by the Continental division of the Ford Motor Company for the model year 1955-57. The car was dubbed the Mark II denoting the second generation, following the 1939-1948 Lincoln Continental. At the time the Continental was the most expensive car sold in the United States, being offered for $ 9,960.00 (equivalent to $ 93,150.00 in 2018). Ford is reported to have lost about $1,000. on each Mark II it sold. Thirty three years later, in 1989, Ford introduced the Mark III.
