First introduced in 1971 the Alpine A310 replaced the earlier, 4 cylinder, A110. While the new car was larger and heavier it retained the same, rear mounted 4 cylinder engine as the A110 and was considered to be underpowered. Restyled in 1976 the A310 was fit with a larger and more powerful, rear mounted, V-6 PRV engine. The A310 handling characteristics were similar to the rear engine Porsche 911, its primary competitor.
